Monsters

I do love monsters especially ones that instill a certain feeling of dread in me, here are a few of my favorites.

Alien from Alien & Aliens (the other movies were poor in my opinion)



An iconic image of fear and a nightmarish reminder of what it would be like to move down the food chain a little, the design is by Geiger and Ridley Scott approach him to do the monster designs after seeing his rather dark artwork. The humanoid body gives it a certain uncomfortable familiarity while it's relentless speed and ability for hunting us gives us the viewerthe impression of what it would be like to be hunted.

Regenerator from Resident Evil 4




I really love to hate these things and they do give me a feeling of uneasiness, it's not just the way they look but also the way they move and that freakish breathing that they do as they lumber towards you. This monster also plays along the humanoid track with it's familiar shape but there is nothing human about this creature, it is truly relentless and it's ability to regenerate really forces the player to focus and stay calm, even when the thing is within striking distance!!

Thing from The Thing



Now this is an interesting one as the monster itself never really appears, by this I mean that the monster takes on the DNA of it's victims in a kind of Invasion of the body snatchers kind of way. The fleshy piles of aggression are always an amalgamation of different body parts and pays absolutely no attention to the rules of anatomy. In this film though what truly make the monster unique is the way it plays on our paranoia as each member of the cast becomes the potential threat causing rifts within the unit making them more vulnerable to attack. The clip I show here is still my favorite from the film and shows how adaptable the monster is with it's ability to utilise any DNA. Truly a gross and highly intelligent being.
